Physical?

I had my first complete physical examination since 1991, the year before my senior year of college. You had to have one to participate in the athletic program. Well the results of the physical in 1991 were a bit different than the news given to me yesterday.

The lovely nurse practitioner informed me that I had high blood pressure and that if it was not brought down in the next two months, I would have to go on medication. Some ways she suggested were:

  1. Loose weight, I am 72 inches tall and weigh in at 228lbs She thought thirty pounds would be good. Her chart says I should weigh in at 177 hee hee.
  2. Reduce salt intake, I do not put extra salt on my food often. Just the steak and potatoes.
  3. Less red meat, who wants to eat steak with out salt anyway?
  4. Exercise
  5. Reduce alcohol intake, Not happening.
Exercise, I miss exercise but not enough to have done anything about it. I tried in April, for three weeks I set the alarm at five, got up, went for a jog, did my sit ups and push ups. Then my knee started to act up and I was tired. That was that for that. Time to try again.

I have two months and then medication, I do not need medication, I need to get in shape.

We started swimming. I'll tell you, it's been the best exercise for us. Low stress, low time commitment and sometimes the views aren't bad either. (That can go both ways, I'm sure.)

Plus, it doesn't matter on size since water makes you lighter. If any clubs have pools up by you, you should check them out.

It really shouldn't be a problem - you can do it! How about just walking? Any destinations nearby enough to walk to instead of drive? Or you could walk in the evenings with the wife and kids. I'm glad that you had the check-up, though. Your good health is so vital to not just you, but your family now.
Screw the reduction of booze. If you just do one or two of those things, you'll be good. Or, INCREASE the booze to the point where you start dancing around the house and singing show tunes. That's always fun! ;) And it works, too. Trust me.

Drinking aside (I'm an alcoholic, so quitting was huge. You're not, so I have no idea what you're supposed to do, being normal and all), getting in shape has been unbelievably fun for me. I'm a little teeny bit older than you, and it's only since 2004 that I've made an increading effort to get in shape.

It's totally worthy it, dude. Just to have your kids say "Dad, you look awesome."

Also, it makes the wife frisky.

Rock on.

Get the kids involved with the exercise...go play! The whole family will reap the rewards. Swimming and bicycling would both be easy on the knees.

I advocate running because, not only is it free to just run out your front door and get crackin', but it's also the best cardio workout there is, though it is largely an exercise in pain management. I also have always had problems with my knees (ever since I destroyed them by skating as a teenager), but I recently foud that there's some pretty good info on many common problems and how to handle them on the internet. If you're interested, check out Cool Running. Anyway, good luck.
